Passive Gamma Emission Tomography for Nuclear Safeguards
Passive Gamma Emission Tomography (PGET) is a technology that is used by IAEA Safeguards to verify the number of fuel pins in a spent nuclear fuel assembly. A spent fuel assembly can be considered to be a set of 3 m long pins, each about 1 cm in diameter, filled with highly radioactive material. The measurement is performed underwater at one axial position of the assembly. In the reconstructed image, fuel pins appear as bright spots and missing-pin locations appear as dark regions.
The IAEA Technology Foresight is currently preparing a Tomography Reconstruction and Analysis Challenge to seek improved methods for automated processing and analysis of PGET data.
